BILL AFTER CANCELLATION · NETHERLANDS

Cancelled your subscription. Still receiving bills?

The day you cancel is not always the day the contract ends. Compare the confirmation with the invoice so you can identify the charged period and explain any discrepancy precisely.

Check three separate dates

  1. Cancellation date: when did you tell the company you wanted to stop?
  2. End date: when does the contract end according to the agreement and confirmation?
  3. Billing period: which period or service does the charge cover?

An invoice received after the end date may cover an earlier period. Check for final usage charges or a closing statement rather than relying on the invoice date alone.

Can charges remain after cancellation?

ACM ConsuWijzer distinguishes a fixed term from renewal. You generally cannot simply end a fixed term early. Renewed subscriptions usually have a maximum one-month notice period, with exceptions. Accepting a new offer may create a new contract.

This guide concerns Dutch consumer subscriptions. Association memberships and specialised contracts can differ. For phone, internet and television, read ACM’s separate telecom guidance. Do not automatically apply the general explanation to business contracts, insurance or another country.

Find the cancellation evidence

If confirmation is missing, ask when cancellation was received and what end date was recorded. A saved draft alone does not establish that a message was sent. Share only relevant records and hide unrelated transactions.

Example: a charge beyond the confirmed end date

Fictional situation: Lina’s confirmation says her subscription ends on 30 September. She later receives an invoice labelled “October subscription”. She asks why October is charged and attaches the confirmation. If it covered September or itemised final usage, the arrival date alone would not establish an error.

Sample reply disputing a bill after cancellation

To: [company]
From: [name and customer number]
Date: [date]
Subject: invoice [number] after cancellation

Dear Sir or Madam,

I cancelled my subscription on [date]. Your confirmation dated [date] states that it ends on [end date]. I nevertheless received invoice [number] for €[amount], covering [period or description].

I dispute [the amount / specific item] because [factual reason, for example: the subscription period charged is after the confirmed end date]. I attach the relevant confirmation.

Please check how this invoice arose. If you consider the amount payable, please provide a breakdown and explain the contractual basis. If it is an error, please correct the invoice and confirm this in writing.

Please respond by [reasonable response date]. Please also confirm how you will handle payment and any collection activity while investigating.

Kind regards,
[Name]

Attachment: [cancellation confirmation or relevant evidence]

No confirmed end date? Say so and ask the company to verify receipt and the end date first. Your requested response date does not extend an existing payment deadline.

If a reminder or collection letter arrives

Do not ignore it. Send the specific dispute and evidence to the party now demanding payment too. A complaint does not automatically stop collection. Check new deadlines and get help with court documents. See disputing a Dutch collection bill or a reminder after payment.

If you still need to cancel, you can contact the company directly yourself. Briefhelder is not a cancellation service: it helps explain a received letter and prepare an appropriate response. You send it yourself.

Explain the discrepancy clearly

See the explanation and possible next steps. Where appropriate, prepare an editable reply, review it, copy or download it and send it yourself.
