Sent the parcel back. Still getting bills?
Returning a parcel and updating the invoice are separate steps. Gather the order details, your return notification and dispatch evidence so you can ask why the balance remains open.

Online consumer purchases often have a cooling-off period, with exceptions. Sending a parcel back alone may not clearly communicate withdrawal. Check your notice to the seller and ACM ConsuWijzer’s cooling-off guidance.
Changing your mind about an in-store purchase does not automatically give a return right. Faulty goods follow a different guarantee route. This guide concerns Dutch consumer matters, not business purchases or return rights worldwide.
Match the order, return and invoice
- Order: which items and amounts belong to this purchase?
- Notice: when and how did you tell the seller you wanted to withdraw?
- Return: dispatch date, address, receipt and tracking number.
- Processing: acknowledgement, credit note or refund.
- Invoice: which items or charges remain outstanding?
A generated return label is not proof of dispatch. Keep the drop-off receipt and seller’s messages. Tracking can help but does not itself prove the parcel’s contents. Share only relevant records.
Example: two items, one returned
Fictional situation: Alex ordered items costing €40 and €60, excluding any delivery fees. The €60 item was returned and the seller acknowledged receipt, but the invoice still lists both. Alex requests processing using the order number and acknowledgement. The retained €40 item remains relevant; any other charges need checking separately.
What if you already paid?
ACM ConsuWijzer explains a 14-day refund period after withdrawal within the cooling-off period. The seller can wait for the goods or evidence of dispatch. Original delivery charges do not have to be refunded for a partial return.
Ask for a breakdown if the refund differs from what you expected. ACM distinguishes standard delivery costs and possible diminished value. Returning goods does not necessarily remove every charge. If the parcel is lost or its contents are disputed, seek an assessment of the evidence and return arrangements; this article does not decide liability.
Sample reply: return not reflected in the bill

To: [seller] From: [name and customer number] Date: [date] Subject: return and invoice for order [number] Dear Sir or Madam, On [date] I notified you that I wanted to return [items] / withdraw from the purchase under order [number]. I dispatched them on [date] using [carrier], with reference [tracking number]. I attach [dispatch evidence and any acknowledgement]. Invoice or reminder [number] still includes €[amount] for [item or charge]. Please investigate whether the return has been linked to the correct order. Please process the return if it meets the applicable requirements and send an updated statement. If you consider the charge payable, please explain why and provide a breakdown. [If already paid: Please confirm the refund amount and when it will be made.] Please respond in writing by [reasonable response date] and confirm how the payment request will be handled while you investigate. Choose the accurate description of your notice. Do not claim an acknowledgement you do not have. Send through the official contact channel yourself. Your requested response date does not extend a payment deadline.
A payment provider or collector sends the reminder
Notify the party requesting payment too and follow its return or dispute process. Ask in writing what happens to the deadline; do not assume a return notification automatically pauses payment. Keep checking new letters. See disputing a Dutch collection bill and a reminder after payment.
If you have no bill or refusal yet, you can first ask the seller directly whether the return was processed. You do not need to purchase anything to do that.
