DUTCH 14-DAY LETTER / WIK NOTICE
A letter says you have 14 days to pay. What now?
The letter warns that collection charges may follow. Start by checking the bill, the time allowed and the amount being announced. This guide explains what to look for and how to ask a precise question when something is unclear.

For a Dutch consumer bill, a creditor must first give an opportunity to pay before collection charges can become due. This reminder is often called a WIK-brief or veertiendagenbrief. The Dutch Chamber of Commerce explains the reminder and its timing.
The heading alone does not establish validity. Read the actual request. Charges announced for later are different from charges the sender says are already due. This guide does not cover fines, tax assessments or business invoices.
1. Check the bill, receipt and wording
- Bill: do you recognise the creditor, invoice and outstanding amount?
- Receipt: note when the letter or email reached you. A postmark alone does not establish your receipt date.
- Time allowed: what start and deadline does it give? KVK explains that the fourteen-day period starts on the day after receipt, rather than simply the date printed on the letter.
- Charges: what amount is announced if payment is not made in time?
If receipt is uncertain or the wording is unclear, have the deadline checked. Briefhelder should not invent a missing receipt date. Do not wait until an estimated final day to act.
Dagtekening is the date on the letter; ontvangst means receipt; incassokosten means collection charges. These terms describe different parts of the request.
Example: two amounts, not two purchases
Fictional situation: a reminder asks for a €180 outstanding bill. It separately warns that €40 in collection charges will be added if payment is late. In this example, the €40 is announced for later; it is not another purchase.
Check whether the current demand is €180 or whether charges have already been added. This illustration does not establish that your letter is valid or its charges justified.
2. Understand the collection-cost figure
The Dutch government sets out the statutory scale and €40 figure. This does not mean every reminder automatically makes €40 payable or that a creditor must charge at least €40. First establish whether collection costs are due at all. A creditor can ask for less or waive charges.
If unclear, request separate figures for the original bill, interest and collection charges. This page does not calculate costs for your individual case. Multiple invoices or particular circumstances may need closer review.
3. Choose the next step that fits
- Correct bill, able to pay: verify payment details, allow for payment to arrive in time and keep proof.
- Already paid: use the payment-check guide.
- Disputed bill: explain the issue using the dispute checklist and sample letter.
- Unable to pay: ask about a payment plan. A request alone is not approval or extra time.
Sample reply: ask about the deadline and charges
Use for unclear timing or amounts, not to dispute the whole debt. Remove questions already answered. Check whether English is accepted; a Dutch draft may be more suitable for the recipient.
Subject: payment deadline and charges – invoice [number] Dear Sir or Madam, I received your reminder dated [letter date] concerning invoice [number]. Please clarify the following point: [identify the unclear date, wording or charge]. Which receipt date have you used to calculate the payment period, and what final payment date are you applying? I received the letter on [date, only if known]. Please confirm the amount requested now and which charges are only announced in the event of late payment. Please show the original bill, interest and collection charges separately. Please confirm whether you will extend the deadline while addressing my question. Without confirmation, I will not assume an extension has been granted. Kind regards, [Name]
Check the recipient through a reliable contact route. Keep your message and reply. Asking a question does not automatically extend a deadline.
Has the period already passed?
Read the latest letter and check the current balance. Do not assume earlier payment details or amounts are still correct. If a summons or another formal court document arrives, follow its specific instructions and seek qualified help promptly. A WIK letter is not itself a court judgment.
