MUNICIPAL PARKING TAX · NETHERLANDS

Paid for parking. Still received a parking notice?

Compare the municipal assessment with your parking session. Do the licence plate, location and time match? Those details help you explain the issue. Here is what to check and what a written objection can look like.

Municipal parking tax or a CJIB traffic fine?

This guide concerns a naheffingsaanslag parkeerbelasting: an additional parking-tax assessment from a Dutch municipality or its tax organisation. It is different from the CJIB traffic-fine procedure. If your letter says CJIB and carries a letter code, start with the CJIB guide.

A private parking-company invoice is not automatically a municipal tax assessment either. Do not use this objection template for a different procedure without checking.

1. Match the session to the assessment

Where available, view inspection photos through the official municipal portal. A bank debit alone may not identify the zone and paid period. Share only relevant evidence and hide unrelated transactions and your balance.

Example: the inspection happened during the paid session

Fictional situation: Robin’s notice lists an inspection at 14:20. The app history shows a session from 14:00 to 15:00 for the same licence plate and relevant zone. Robin keeps the transaction details and compares the location with the assessment.

This provides specific information for review. It does not guarantee cancellation: the municipality must assess the evidence and objection.

2. Check both the objection and payment deadlines

The Hague states a six-week objection period from the date on the notice. Check your assessment and the issuing authority’s official instructions. The payment deadline is separate. Find out how to respond in time rather than waiting for every detail to be perfect.

Payment postponement is municipality-specific. Amsterdam describes conditions for objections within two weeks; Rotterdam describes postponement when an objection is made. Do not apply either rule automatically to another municipality. Ask your issuer which payment obligation applies to your notice.

Sample objection: parking was paid for

Use only when supported by your evidence. Check whether the authority accepts English; a Dutch draft may be more appropriate. Submit through the permitted route on your assessment. Uploading to Briefhelder does not file an objection.

To: [municipality or tax authority on the assessment]
From: [name and address]
Date: [date]
Subject: objection to parking tax assessment [reference]
Licence plate: [plate]

Dear Sir or Madam,

I object to the parking tax assessment dated [date], relating to parking on [parking date] at [inspection time] at [location].

My parking record shows payment for licence plate [plate] on [date], from [start time] to [end time], in zone [zone]. The inspection time falls within that period. I attach the parking-session record and relevant payment details.

Please compare this evidence with the inspection record and reconsider the assessment. I request cancellation if your review confirms that the required parking tax was paid.

Please acknowledge receipt and send your decision. Please also confirm what payment obligation applies while this objection is considered.

Kind regards,
[Name]
[Signature if submitted by post]

If the plate, zone or period does not match, explain what actually happened instead of copying a claim that it does. Check extra requirements if acting for someone else.

Wrong licence plate or broken meter?

Rotterdam lists payment for the wrong licence plate as a reason to object with proof. It does not list a broken meter with no payment as a sufficient reason. Neither statement guarantees the outcome of your case. Explain the facts and follow local guidance; never invent a payment or emergency.

3. Submit it yourself and keep confirmation

Use the official portal or postal address for your assessment. Check attachments and signature requirements. Keep the full objection and proof of submission. If no acknowledgement arrives, ask the issuer whether it was received.

If rejected, read the decision’s next-step instructions and deadline. Do not simply resend the same letter. Seek qualified help if the deadline is close or the procedure is unclear. Dutch parking-tax procedures do not apply to parking notices worldwide.
