Dutch court summons? Find your next step

Updated 24 October 2026 · Netherlands

A Dutch court summons is not an ordinary payment reminder. First identify the court, the claim and the date for responding. Choose the relevant route below.

Dutch civil proceedings only. Criminal summonses and administrative proceedings follow different rules. If the date is close or has passed, seek legal help promptly and check the court’s instructions.

Which situation applies?

Find these five details

  1. The court, case reference and parties’ names.
  2. The claim: the amount or action the other party seeks.
  3. The stated date, time and response method.
  4. The documents relied on by the other party.
  5. What your own records can establish.

Keep the entire summons and attachments. List unclear points. Verify court contact details on the official court website.

Discussing payment does not automatically stop the case

Negotiating a solution with the other party does not automatically remove the need to respond to the court. Check which procedural steps remain necessary. For an ordinary payment demand, use our debt collection guide.
