Spanish bank letter: ask for clarification or prepare a complaint

Understand an unfamiliar charge or bank response, and prepare a clear Spanish reply using your own facts.

Begin with what the bank actually says

Find the account reference, amount, date and reason given for a charge or decision. Keep the original wording alongside the explanation. An unfamiliar fee is not automatically an unlawful fee: request the contractual basis or a breakdown when it is unclear.

Clarification or complaint?

If you do not yet know what happened, a focused information request is a useful first step. If you have checked the facts and want to challenge the response, describe the problem, the evidence and the outcome you request. Never add a history of earlier complaints that did not happen.

Use the designated complaints route

Banco de España explains that a written complaint to the institution’s designated customer-service department comes first. Escalation depends on the prior response and applicable conditions. Keep proof of submission. Briefhelder does not calculate those periods or guarantee a refund.

Choose your languages

Select Spain and the banking topic. Read the explanation in English or Dutch and select Spanish for the draft. Complete the reference and any placeholders, check the recipient, then copy or download it. The service does not send or file your complaint.

What falls outside this guide?

Court documents, tax demands, insurance and investment disputes need their own routes. A general contact address in a letter is not proof of the bank’s complaints channel. Check it independently before sending.
