What does the sender actually say?

Identify the creditor, collector, reference, amount and stated dates. Separate the amount claimed from the question of whether you owe it. Briefhelder can clarify the message, but does not establish whether the claim is valid.

Ask a specific question

Commerce Commission guidance says you can ask for information when a debt’s origin or amount is unclear. If you genuinely disagree, explain your own reasons. An information request does not establish that collection stops. Court and tribunal documents require a separate response route.

Do not adopt a position that is not yours

“I do not understand the amount” is different from “I already paid this”. Use only facts you can check. An invoice, payment record or agreement can help your own review. Do not add an admission, payment promise or dispute simply because it sounds persuasive.

Limits of this help

This module helps with New Zealand consumer-debt information. It does not calculate legal deadlines, assess limitation periods or prepare a court defence. US validation periods are not applied. For urgent matters, check the original instructions and obtain suitable local help.

Fictional, adaptable example

Example: ask for the basis and amount

Dear Sir or Madam,

For reference [reference], please provide the basis of the claim, supporting documents and a breakdown of the amount requested.

Kind regards,
