Understand first, then choose

Is the letter about a fee, a missing document or a response to your complaint? These are different situations. Compare it with your statement and earlier correspondence. A charge you do not recognise is not yet a proven error.

What information helps?

Identify the provider, reference, date and passage you do not understand. Distinguish what you have already done from what remains unknown. Leave out full account numbers and other sensitive details that are unnecessary for the explanation.

The limited complaint route

CCPC guidance starts with contacting the provider, explaining the problem and desired solution, and keeping correspondence. CCPC does not investigate individual complaints. This module does not determine whether an ombudsman can consider your complaint.

Ireland is not Northern Ireland

Choose Republic of Ireland only when it is the relevant jurisdiction. English wording or an Irish correspondence address does not prove that. Northern Ireland, court procedures, compensation calculations and assessing insurance or investment claims are outside this module.

Fictional, adaptable example

Example: you do not understand a charge

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your letter dated [date], reference [reference], mentions [charge]. Please explain what this charge relates to and how the amount was calculated.

Kind regards,
[Name]
