A Hong Kong bank letter: get a clear explanation before you complain
An unfamiliar fee, a rejected request or an unclear bank response? Separate what the letter says from what you still need to ask.

Customer service or a formal complaint?
HKMA encourages you to complain to the bank first. Use its designated complaints contact: ordinary customer service may not be sufficient. Check the contact through the bank’s official website or authenticated banking app.
Make the question specific
Compare the reference, transaction date and amount with your records. Say which part is unclear and what explanation you need. Do not share an account password, PIN, one-time code or a full card number.
Example: ask how a charge was calculated
Dear complaints team,
Your letter dated [date], reference [reference], mentions a charge of [amount]. Please explain the service and period to which this charge relates, how it was calculated, and which agreed term or fee schedule you applied.
If the charge has been applied incorrectly, please correct it and confirm the adjustment in writing. Please tell me if you need any further relevant information to investigate.
Kind regards,

Illustrative draft, not a real customer case. Replace the brackets with your own facts. This wording asks for an investigation; it does not establish a right to a refund.
What HKMA can and cannot do
HKMA supervises banks, but cannot decide a bank-customer dispute or order compensation. A monetary dispute may have a separate FDRC route. Eligibility, deadlines and arbitration are not assessed here.
This guide concerns Hong Kong banking matters, not mainland China or Macau. Court papers, tax demands and investment advice need separate qualified help. A clarification request does not itself extend a deadline in your letter.
Choose Hong Kong and banking complaint or clarification. Local procedural information is available only if the source check passes and the letter fits this narrow scope. Otherwise you receive general explanation and reply help.
