Start with the document type

A collection letter, a Letter of Claim and a court claim are different documents. Find the sender, title, reference and enclosures. Note the requested action and the exact date stated. English wording does not establish that English law applies.

Before proceedings: Letter of Claim

The Pre-Action Protocol for Debt Claims covers certain business claims against individuals before proceedings. Other protocols and specified tax claims are excluded. When applicable, use its Reply Form and request relevant documents. Supplementary wording does not replace the form.

A court claim has already started

GOV.UK directs you to the claim’s instructions and response date. Follow its official process, for example online for an online claim. An email to the creditor does not replace a court response.

Your position remains your own

“I do not recognise this amount” does not prove the claim is wrong. Separate questions, documented payments and genuine disagreements. Briefhelder does not choose an admission or defence, calculate a deadline or submit documents. Seek qualified local help if you are unsure which formal step is needed.

Check before responding

From explanation to a suitable next step

Choose England and Wales in the analysis tool and the appropriate topic: pre-action debt or court money claim. Receive a clear explanation and next steps. When useful, edit a supplementary reply, copy or download it and send it yourself. A completed court defence is not prepared.
